Old Hindi songs

Only in North India can you hear old Hindi songs on street corners and from passersby on the road. Even the students here listen to quite a bit of old Hindi songs. Although most of the 'old' songs nowadays are restricted to Kishore Kumar (on the male singer side), there are a few exceptions. Someone on the floor below mine is currently listening to Rafi's classic 'ham bekhudi men tum ko pukaare chale gaye'.
The Philips dealer's stall at Index also played old Rafi songs resung by Sonu Nigam. I heard 'nazar men bijli, ada men shole' which Sonu Nigam sang fairly well.
And I was most surprised to hear a not-so-common Mahendra Kapoor song being sung by the hostel sweeper a few days ago, the words of which escape me at the moment.

I have noticed that most engineering students I know, here in US, atleast those who came here for MS+ are interested in old songs. Mostly kishore kumar, but I have found quite a few who are rafi/mukesh fans.

Reminds me of two incidents(not entirely related to the post but interesting anyways):

I used to play tennis with my neighbor(in Charleston when I was workig at Blackbaud), who is from Uzbekistan, and is a big kishore kumar fan. Even though he admitted that he did not like mukesh, he did say that his parents were big fans of mukesh-raj kapoor pair. Even now he watches most indian movies.

While coming back from LA to Raleigh, I had a short conversation with my cab driver- who was an iranian - and was a huge rafi fan, his favorite indian actors were dev anand and raj kapoor :)

Really very interesting pieces of observation.
I am particularly enamoured by THE Mahendra Kapoor fan.
It would be intersting exercise to collect songs of Manna Day and his duets, becuase you would not find these high in popularity rankings, but some these are simply jewels.

Hindi music and songs are pretty popular in all the erstwhile Soviet states, as well in the middle east and Africa. Raj Kapoor is truly an icon, i guess more remembered in Russia than in India .
Thankfully the remix bandwagon hasnt steamrolled songs by Rafi ,Manna de , mahendra kapoor etc. They are much above their tastes I feel.

I wish it remains that way :)

I am totally against remixes. I do admit that there are good things about it. The main thing that goes for it is the fact that they use the same lyrics of old songs(lyrics that used to be good), but then why not listen to the original song in the first place :-/

Some people like listening to different types of music in different moods. Using this as a premise, here's one way of stretching the remix thing to its extreme: Imagine a CD with all the tracks being the same song remixed several times. You just love the lyrics of the song. When you are in a mood of listening to rock music(frustration) then listen to track 4(rock remixed version of the song) and so on...I am not sure what it buys me, but an interesting way of thinking about it anyway.

The mention of Hindi film songs heard in the street brought the memories of how I felt when, in US I suddenly heard the golden voice of Lata Mangeshkar at a grocery store owned by a Sikh. The walls were decorated by big portraits of Madhubala, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Nutan, etc - only the stars of yesteryears and no mega star of current bollywood. The songs you hear are only old gold, and then you just have to imagine how would we feel in a foreign land.
